Boat insurance is a contract between the policyholder, and an insurance company designed to provide financial protection in the event of accidents or incidents involving the insured watercraft. It is an essential safeguard for any boat owner, helping protect against a variety of risks depending on the coverage selected, including collision accidents, accident-related injuries, vandalism, theft, fire, hurricanes, and other unforeseen events that can damage the vessel and disrupt recreational activities, travel plans, and financial peace of mind. If the boat is transported using a trailer, it is prudent to add appropriate trailer coverage to the policy.

Among the primary coverages available are:

Liability Coverage

  • Covers property damage and bodily injury caused to others in accidents where the insured is legally responsible. In Texas, the minimum required coverage is $30,000 per injured person, up to a maximum of $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident, commonly known as 30/60/25 coverage. We strongly advise policyholders to consider higher liability limits to better protect their assets in the event of multi-party accidents involving damage to other vessels, passengers, or crew members.

Comprehensive Coverage

  • Protects against theft or damage caused by natural disasters, vandalism, and other non-collision-related losses.

Collision Coverage

  • Protects against theft or damage caused by natural disasters, vandalism, and other non-collision-related losses.

Medical Payments Coverage

  • Covers medical expenses for the boat operator and passengers. Some insurance companies may also extend coverage to injuries sustained while participating in water sports activities associated with the insured boat.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

  • PIP is generally associated with land-based vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles. Similar to Medical Payments coverage, it helps cover accident-related medical expenses regardless of fault. However, boat insurance functions differently. Watercraft policies primarily focus on protecting the vessel itself against physical damage and providing liability protection for accidents arising from its operation.

Uninsured/Underinsured Watercraft Coverage

  • Provides protection if you are involved in an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured boat operator. It may also apply in hit-and-run boating accidents, making it critical to gather evidence and obtain witness information whenever possible.

Watercraft Towing and Labor Coverage

  • Covers towing expenses when the boat becomes disabled and cannot be safely navigated. Depending on the insurer, emergency labor assistance may be included as part of the base policy or offered as an optional endorsement to help repair or address a mechanical breakdown.

Trailer Towing, Roadside Assistance / Trip Interruption

  • Covers towing expenses to the nearest repair facility if the trailer becomes disabled while transporting the boat. Some insurance companies may also offer optional coverage enhancements that include reimbursement for the cost of a temporary replacement vehicle if the trailer is damaged in an accident and immediate alternative transportation is required.

*It is important to understand that policy terms, conditions, and coverage availability may vary from one insurance company to another. It is critical to carefully review each policy in order to fully understand the scope of coverage and any exclusions that may apply.
